Men & women in uniform get a free donut on the 70th anniversary of events that inspired the observance

DENVER, Colo., May 24, 2007 – In honor of the 70th anniversary of the events that inspired National Donut Day, on June 1, LaMar’s Donuts is offering a free donut to each man and woman visiting any LaMar’s location wearing a military or public-safety service uniform.

In 1917, Salvation Army female volunteers known as “lassies” prepared thousands of fresh donuts to the homesick doughboys fighting in France during World War I. Twenty-one years later, the Chicago Salvation Army established National Donut Day in 1938 to raise much-needed funds during the Great Depression. Each year, National Donut Day is celebrated on the first Friday in June.

“LaMar’s is proud to share in the celebration of National Donut Day,” said Anthony Bonelli, CEO of LaMar’s “and to demonstrate our support for fellow Americans who risk their lives for the security and safety of all of us.”

In tribute to the traditions and origin of National Donut Day, LaMar’s is featuring its Old Fashioned Sour Cream donut, a treat that is similar to the pastries made by the lassies seven decades ago.

LaMar’s now has 24 locations in six states: Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska. LaMar’s donuts have been recommended by Zagat’s Survey, the New Yorker and Gourmet Magazine, and have been chosen as best donut by newspapers nationwide.
